“He wakes from a dream, disoriented, agitated. His wife is by his side.

She was next to him in the dream as well. And in it, too, he was agitated and out of sorts. They were driving together down a country road lined with trees and shrubs. There was an uncertain light. It may have been dawn, or after sunset. The sky was pale with a touch of red.
The landscape reminded him of an old oil painting, a rural scene, dark and desolate. The foliage of the trees loomed like clouds while the trunks threw thin shadows that accompanied them along one side of the road. […]
